There have been a lot of links to news stories posted on the forum in the past, about victims who have lost money in scams, or who were arrested as a result of a scam they were taken in by, or who committed suicide due to a scam, if you know a link to a BBC or any other news story concerning a victim, please post the link to the article, as many links as possible,please, cheers.

Hundreds of news reports from 2001 (at the bottom) to 2007 (at the top). Copy the links from the page - it uses frames and the address bar doesn't show the address of the article. Here are a few I found:

This stuff really P's me O. If the bank can't tell the difference between a real or fake cashier's check after inspecting it and running it though the system THREE TIMES, how is it fair that the guy who trusted the bank's word gets shafted? I know somebody's gotta lose, but it seems to me that this guy, suspicious but in good faith, did everything you could expect to make sure the check was legit, and the bank told him it was perfectly alright until days later. Maybe if the banks lose a few hundred thousand in bad checks, they'll start finding ways to work with international police and go after the guys who mail the damn things.

I'd like to add my voice to the suggestion that this be made into a sticky.

The reason I'm suggesting this is because I've found myself several times searching for such news stories to back up my explanations to people as to why I scambait. Many people really don't realize the scope of the problem, and believe that it's rare that anyone who isn't a knuckle-dragging bozo living in the backwoods would ever fall for it. It's also a great tool to recruit new baiters -- "Check out this thread and see the real people who've have had their lives ruined...why don't you join us in this fight?"

I also think it's important for us as baiters to occasionally remind ourselves why we do this. Visiting this thread on a regular basis to see what new victims have been reported is a good exercise in motivation.

Sadly, the scammers-exposed.com site is down - it carried some good write-ups from people who have obviously taken the time to research their lads.

In answer to the question in the O/P...

16 kidnapping and 4 murders (all scam related) are summarised here -> CLICKY

However, the report contains typos that make it difficult to find other articles about these cases. For example, the Greek Cypriot victim is referred to as George Makronalli, George Makronelli and George Macromallis on various anti-419 sites.

Murder victim Jean Pierre Li Shing Tat lived in Mauritius but was actually Canadian.

The Norwegian murder victim was actually called Kjetil Moe (not Kjetil Moc) and there is a report here -> CLICKY
Another article mentions Moe and a couple of kidnapping victims who survived -> CLICKY

I also know of one victim suicide related to 419, but don't have a reference

All the victims made the mistake of travelling to foreign countries in search of riches, and no one here will do that. Nevertheless, this may be a good time to remind our newbies to bait safely and never use their real IDs or misuse someone else's. That's Rule #1 in my sig block.

Thanks for the info TFI. When I try to open the website, I just get a message "Loading..." and it stops there, but maybe that is just a local difficulty.

That isn't the suicide case I'm think of, but it will be useful for SP's purposes, no doubt.

@ Zen, I have had several links to murders, kidnappings etc, for the last couple of years on my old site, I didn't have the Norwegian language link or the international kidnapping link you posted, though it mentions the victims stories I already had links to, I have added it.

The full site wont be online until I get the site finished and some proper webhosting sorted, should be in a couple of weeks or so, the links to "external" sites on the news page do work, the "internal" site menu links don't work, as I have not uploaded those webpages, the only link that works is the link which goes to a temp Scam Info Links portal I set up.

Four news articles of a 50-year-old man who sent close to 30k euros to Ghana due to a love scam. Articles are in Finnish though.

Regarding "sticky" maybe just a list of the articles categorized by type--"Suicide"-"Victim Arrested--put in the FAQ or as a sticky for anyone who wonders about the truth about victims.

Just a slight necro to the topic, but as it's related and I was the topic starter it should be alright.

I now have my site online, there are a couple of the pages in the menu that need completing, namely the scam links directory, the scam videos page and the fake documents page, I will finish those of shortly and add to the rest of the site as I go along to make it in to a nice scam information links site.

@ Eight, you might notice some familiar text on the site, you weren't around at the time, so I asked Lotta if it was ok to nick your stuff rather than me having to rewrite it all again from scratch Razz
